Closing the Gap: A Look at Prize Money in Golf’s Open Championships
Every July and August, the golfing world celebrates two of the sport’s greatest championships - the Open Championship and the AIG Women’s Open. Both events showcase extraordinary talent, rich traditions, and the challenge of links golf at its finest. Yet one noticeable difference remains: prize money.

This year’s Open Championship features a purse of $17.5 million, while the AIG Women’s Open will offer a record $10 million purse. That’s a difference of $7.5 million, but it’s also evidence of how far the women’s game has come.
Not long ago, the AIG Women’s Open purse was just $3.25 million. Since The R&A and AIG partnered in 2019, the championship purse has more than tripled, making it one of the most significant investments in women’s golf anywhere in the world.
While comparisons between the men’s and women’s championships are inevitable, it’s important to recognize the incredible momentum behind the LPGA Tour. Increased sponsorships, larger television audiences, and growing fan interest continue to drive higher purses and greater opportunities for women professionals.
The athletes competing in the AIG Women’s Open are every bit as dedicated, skilled, and inspiring as their counterparts in The Open Championship. Their performances continue to elevate the game and inspire future generations of girls to dream big.
As someone who has spent a lifetime growing the game, Nancy Lopez has always believed that opportunity creates progress. Every increase in prize money represents more than just a paycheck—it reflects greater recognition, stronger investment, and a brighter future for women’s golf.
The gap isn’t gone, but it is getting smaller.
And that’s something worth celebrating.
