Breathe Better. Play Better.
One of the most powerful tools for improving your golf game is something you already do thousands of times each day—breathe.
When the pressure builds, many golfers unknowingly switch to short, shallow breaths. This “fight or flight” response creates tension in the shoulders, arms, and hands, making it harder to swing freely and commit to the shot. Learning to control your breathing helps quiet the mind, relax the body, and improve focus. Research and golf performance experts have found that diaphragmatic (belly) breathing can reduce tension, improve concentration, and help golfers stay present under pressure.
At Nancy Lopez Golf Adventures, we encourage golfers to make breathing part of every pre-shot routine. It only takes a few seconds:

Take a slow breath in through your nose for four seconds.
Pause briefly.
Exhale slowly through your mouth for six seconds.
As you exhale, let go of tension and focus only on the shot you are about to hit.
This simple routine slows your heart rate, clears mental clutter, and helps you swing with confidence instead of fear.
Nancy has always believed that golf is played one shot at a time. A controlled breath is a wonderful reminder to leave the last shot behind and fully commit to the next one.
The next time you step onto the first tee—or face a pressure-filled putt—don’t rush. Take a breath. Smile. Trust your swing.
Sometimes the best shot of the day begins with the simplest action.
Play Happy!
